Permits
The City of Greeley and the Western Hills Fire Protection District have adopted the 2021 International Fire Code, except as amended in the City of Greeley Municipal Code. The fire code establishes the requirements consistent with nationally recognized good practice for providing a reasonable level of life, safety, and property protection from the hazards of fire, explosion or dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings, structures, and premises, and to provide safety to firefighters and emergency responders during emergency operations.

To Apply for a Permit
The City of Greeley uses eTRAKiT to apply for permits, schedule inspections, and pay fees. To apply for a permit for any of the below-listed reasons, please click HERE. A tent permit is required prior to the erection, assembly or operation of tents having an area in excess of 400 square feet or canopies over 700 square feet. Tent Permits are not valid for more than 180 days in a 12-month period and prior to being occupied, all temporary structure must be inspected by the Greeley Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau.
When applying for a tent permit, please include the following in your application; Site map/diagram showing tent location, Flammability report/flame resistance certification, and Dates of event, including setup and teardown.

Before starting the Burn Permit application process, please ensure that you meet the following requirements.
- Open burning shall be done when the wind is calm or very light (5 mph or less).
- The allowed time period for open burning and smoke emissions is from 2 hours after sunrise to 2 hours before sunset. Smoke emissions from open burns are not allowed within 2 hours of sundown.
- Materials that may be burned are limited to natural vegetation (tree branches less than 2 inches, grass, and weeds). Tree stumps, trunks and limbs larger than what can fit in an installed home wood burning stove may not be open burned. Piles must be smaller than 8ft x 8ft x8ft (512 cubic feet) in size. Hazardous materials and other rubbish shall not be burned.
- Ignition shall be done using a torch, fuse, drip torch or other approved method. Flammable and combustible liquids shall not be used.
- Open burning shall not be conducted within 50 feet of any structure, combustible material, or property lines.
- A water supply shall be provided capable of being used for fire extinguishment.
- The fire must be attended at all times by a person knowledgeable in the use of the required fire extinguishing water supply/equipment and be familiar with the requirement of this permit
- The Fire Department is authorized to require that open burning be immediately discontinued if it is determined by Fire Department personnel that the open burning constitutes a hazardous condition.
- Burning shall be discontinued and the permit shall be cancelled if smoke emissions are offensive, a nuisance or health risk for occupants and animals in the surrounding area.
- During publicly announced periods of AIR POLLUTION EMERGENCY or ALERT, all permits are suspended in the Greeley area. Contact the Air Pollution Control Division at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment at 1-888-484-3247 to determine the status. In such cases, burning may be conducted only with direct permission from the GFD or the WCDPHE authority.
- A "No Burning Declaration" is in effect in the GFD and WHFPD carbon monoxide attainment/maintenance area each year from November 1 to March 31. Burning of agricultural waterways and fields are exempt from the declaration. No burning will take place during an "Ozone Action Day Alert" during the months of June, July and August.
- No burning is allowed during RED FLAG WARNING DAYS.
- Burn location must have adequate access for fire department apparatus.
- Open burning on commercial property is prohibited.
If you can meet these requirements, you will first apply through the Weld County Department of Health and Environment Environmental Health Services Air Quality Program website for an Outdoor Burning permit. If issued a burn permit by Weld County, the Greeley Fire Department will then conduct a review, based on fire safety and fire code, to determine if we will issue a Greeley Fire Department Burn Permit. You must be issued both permits prior to conducting open burning and adhere to all terms and conditions in the Greeley Fire Department Permit. Failure to do so may incur a fine and/or legal action.
