About
The Property & Evidence Unit is responsible for the secure storage, preservation, and release of all property and evidence collected during investigations. All items are maintained in accordance with Colorado law and agency policy.
Property Release Process
- Property must be authorized for release prior to scheduling an appointment.
- Valid government-issued identification is required.
- If picking up for another person, a notarized letter or power of attorney will be required that grants you permission to pick up the owner's belongings.
- Appointments are required; walk-ins are not accepted.
Firearm Release Requirements (Colorado)
Firearm releases are conducted in accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes and applicable federal law.
- Firearms will only be returned to the lawful owner.
- The receiving party must not be prohibited from possessing firearms under state or federal law.
- A background check will be required prior to release.
- A court order may be required for certain seized firearms.
- Firearms associated with protection orders, criminal cases or mental health holds may have additional restrictions/
- All firearm transfers must comply with Colorado laws, including requirements for transfers through a licensed dealer when applicable.
- Firearms must be transported unloaded and in a case in compliance with Colorado law.
