Greeley Police Chief Adam Turk began his law enforcement career 29 years ago with the Evans Police Department before joining the Greeley Police Department in 1999. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Northern Colorado and is a 2016 graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #266.

Throughout his tenure with the Greeley Police Department, Chief Turk has served in various roles, including officer, sergeant, commander, and deputy chief. In 2015, he played a key role in collaborating with the Weld County District Attorney’s Office to establish the 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.

Chief Turk is actively involved in the community, serving on nonprofit boards such as Turning Point and the Human Services Advisory Committee and formerly served on Life Stories Child & Family Advocacy board for nine years. He has led the Greeley Police Department as chief since 2021 and currently serves as President of the Weld County Chiefs of Police Association and 2nd Vice President for the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP). He also serves as co-chair of the CACP legislative committee. Chief Turk resides in Greeley with his wife, Angela, and their two sons.

Michael Zeller

Support Services Division Deputy Chief

Deputy Chief Mike Zeller started his law enforcement career with the Denver Sheriff Department in 1996. From 1998 until 2001 he served as a Deputy Sheriff in Grand County, Colorado. He was hired by the Greeley Police Department in 2001. While with Greeley, Deputy Chief Zeller has served in numerous assignments including supervising patrol, investigations, and community policing functions. He was promoted to the position of Deputy Police Chief in 2018 and has led both the Support Services and Operations Divisions.

Deputy Chief Zeller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Metropolitan State University of Denver and a Master of Public Administration Degree from the University of Colorado-Denver. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command as well as the University of Denver POST Public Safety Leadership Program.

Deputy Chief Edwards

Chief Jason Edwards started his law enforcement career in 2000 and began his career with the Greeley Police Department in 2003. Deputy Chief Edwards has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Northern Colorado, a Master of Science Degree from the University of San Diego and is a 2024 graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #292. Deputy Chief Edwards worked as a Greeley Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, SWAT Officer, Gang Unit Detective, and was assigned as a Task Force Officer for a Federal Agency. He promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2014. As a sergeant, he supervised a patrol shift, the K9 Unit, the 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, SWAT, and the Department’s Training and Personnel Unit.

He promoted to the rank of Commander in 2022. As a Commander, he supervised Patrol and oversaw the Greeley Police K9 Unit.

Deputy Chief Edwards currently leads the Operations Division, which oversees Patrol and our multiple street specialty assignments. As the previous leader of Support Services Division, he was responsible for heading the agency’s Criminal Investigations section, Records and Evidence units, the Professional Standards Office, and the Training/Personnel Unit. Deputy Chief Edwards is dedicated to supporting the agency’s mission to work with our community partners and to provide excellent police services to help make Greeley a safe place to work, live, and visit.

Commanders

Commander Tanya Gutierrez

Commander Tanya Gutierrez began her career with the Greeley Police Department in 1997 where she started as a patrol officer and held the position of Defensive Tactics Instructor. In 2002, she joined the Weld County Drug Task Force where she doubled as the agency’s Criminal Intelligence Officer and worked as a Narcotics Investigator. In 2015, she was promoted to the rank of sergeant where she returned to the patrol division. In 2017, she was again assigned to the Weld County Drug Task Force as the unit’s sergeant. During her time in the Drug Task Force she was involved in several high profile narcotics investigations that spanned across the United States and into Mexico. She and her unit also received several commendations and awards from the RMHIDTA and Drug Enforcement Administration. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Mesa State College and was a Collegiate All-American softball player.

She promoted to the rank of Police Commander in 2022 and currently manages the day to day operations of the department’s Platoon B Swings and Late Shift Patrol Operations. She oversees the Field Training program, the newly formed UAV/ Police Drone Program, and is the liaison for the department’s Mental Health Co-Responder program. Commander Gutierrez supports the honorable work the men and women of the Greeley Police Department do on a daily basis and is excited to continue to work hand and hand with all members of the community to make Greeley safer.

Commander Heck

Commander Mike Heck began his career in law enforcement in 1996 with the Evans Police department. He moved to the Greeley Police Department in March 2000.

In 2003, Commander Heck was assigned to investigations where he investigated property crimes and conducted liquor enforcement. In 2008, he returned to patrol where he spent two years before heading back to investigations where he was assigned to persons crimes. In 2014, Commander Heck was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to patrol followed by a 5-year assignment in the traffic unit. Commander Heck has enjoyed many collateral assignments in the Greeley Police Department including, DARE instructor, Police driving instructor, Field Training Officer, FBI-certified bomb technician, and Motor Officer. He takes great pride in being a certified bomb technician since 2003 and spending time with the amazing bomb squad members.

Commander Heck was born in Landstuhl Germany while his father was serving in the United States Air Force. Commander Heck lived in about a half dozen states and countries until the age of 12 when his father was stationed in Aurora Colorado where he retired and made this their permanent home. Commander Heck was heavily involved in sports and was named the 6A Colorado High School Baseball Player of the Year. These honors helped him obtain a scholarship to the University of Northern Colorado where he graduated with a double major in Speech Communication and Sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice.

Commander Heck is currently the Watch Commander over Patrol – Special Operations. This includes the Neighborhood Action Team, the School Resource Unit, the Traffic Unit and the Special Enforcement Team. Commander Heck also oversees the Greeley/Weld F.B.I. certified Regional Bomb Squad.

Commander Meyer

Fred Meyer is a Commander at the Greeley Police Department. Fred started his career as a police cadet in 1984, then became a police officer with the Greeley Police Department in 1986. He was promoted to sergeant in 1995, then to commander in early 2018. During his career, he has been assigned to the Patrol Tactical Unit, Investigations, the Traffic Unit, the School Resource Officer Unit, and SWAT. Cmdr. Meyer is currently the day shift watch commander. In addition, Cmdr. Meyer is one of the unit commanders for the SWAT and Crisis Negotiations units.

Commander Moran

Commander Mike Moran began his career in law enforcement in 1995 with the Greeley Police Department as a Community Service Officer. In 1996 Commander Moran graduated from the AIM’s Police Academy and was assigned as a patrol officer. In 2000, Commander Moran was assigned to the Investigations section as a detective with the Property Crimes Unit. In 2007, he was assigned to the Weld County Drug Task Force as a narcotics investigator and electronic surveillance specialist.

In 2014, Commander Moran was promoted to the rank of sergeant and returned to the Patrol Division. In 2018, he was reassigned as the sergeant in charge of the Special Enforcement Team where he remained prior to his appointment to the rank of commander. Commander Moran has held collateral assignments including Field Training Officer, SWAT Officer, Electronic Surveillance Specialist, and Field Training Officer Sergeant.

Commander Moran oversees Platoon A Swings/Late shift as the Patrol Watch Commander. His collateral duties will include overseeing the K9 unit and the Field Training program.

Commander Moran is dedicated to the mission of the Greeley Police Department of proudly working with our citizens to protect our community.

Commander Patella

Commander Patella started in law enforcement in 2004, and with the Greeley Police Department since 2007. Commander Patella has held assignments in patrol, neighborhood action team, and SWAT. Commander Patella was promoted to Sergeant in 2017. As a sergeant, he supervised patrol, the Neighborhood Action Team, and SWAT. Commander Patella is the Commander of the Swings/Late B Shift. Commander Patella also oversees SWAT, Crisis Negotiations, Peer Support, and the Animal Control Officers.

Commander Kyle Peltz began his career with the Greeley Police Department in 2008. Commander Peltz worked as a Patrol Officer, SWAT Officer, Property Detective and was an Investigator with the 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team. He promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2018. As a sergeant, he supervised patrol and SWAT. In 2021, Sergeant Peltz was assigned to the Professional Standards Office. Commander Peltz is currently the Commander for the Investigations Division, which is comprised of the Person’s Crime Unit, Property Crime Unit, Gang Unit and Victim Services Unit.

Commander S. Smith

Commander Smith started in law enforcement in 1985 in Wyoming. Smith has been with the Greeley Police Department since 1999.  Commander Smith has held assignments in patrol, school resource unit, drug task force, and SWAT. Smith was promoted to sergeant in 2009 and commander in 2017.  Commander Smith has his BS in criminal justice from Colorado Christian University. Commander Smith is currently the commander for the Weld County Drug Task Force. The WCDTF or “Task” is comprised of investigators from the Greeley Police Department, Weld County Sheriff’s Office, and the Evans Police Department.  The Greeley PD is the lead oversight agency for the Task Force.  Investigators for the Task Force conduct drug-related investigations throughout all of Weld County, Colorado, and at times in other areas of the country.  Their primary focus is on mid to large-size drug trafficking organizations.
