Firearm Investigation at University Elementary School
GREELEY, Colo. – On Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at approximately 8:38 a.m., Greeley Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a 3rd grade student that had a firearm at the University Elementary School, 6525 18th Street. During the investigation, a School Resource Officer learned that when the 3rd grade student arrived at school, they discovered a firearm in their backpack. The student immediately notified a teacher that a firearm was found in the backpack. School officials safely secured the firearm and immediately contacted the Greeley Police Department. The School Resource Officer learned that the father of the student, a 39-year-old male, placed the firearm in the student’s backpack to move the gun from his house to his vehicle. The father of the student forgot to remove the handgun from his child’s backpack, and it was unintentionally brought into the school by the student who did not know the firearm was in the backpack. There were never any threats made and thanks to the action of the student and the teacher the firearm was immediately and safely secured. The father of the student was issued a summons for the unlawful storage of a firearm which is a class 2 misdemeanor. The father of the student will not be identified at this time to avoid identifying the juvenile involved in this case. No additional information will be released today. If you have any information on this case, please contact the Greeley Police Department at 970-350-9605. ###
