GREELEY, Colo. – On Monday, May 19, at approximately 3:30am, a Weld County Deputy reported he was being followed and tailgated by an individual driving a blue sedan. The man was driving aggressively, accelerating and slowing with the deputy’s speed and failing to stop at the stop sign at 25th Avenue and O Street. As the deputy continued to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver pulled up alongside him, driving eastbound in the westbound lane. The vehicle was last seen by the deputy near the Platte Valley Detention Center, traveling westbound. Minutes later, officers received a call from a couple who stated a man in a blue sedan had pointed a gun at them, after following them on O Street. The man followed the couple to 8th Avenue and D Street, where he pulled alongside their passenger side and pointed a handgun at the passenger. As the couple sped away, they heard several gunshots. Nearby officers also heard the gunshots. An officer observed the vehicle pull into a gas station at 35th Avenue and 4th Street and attempted a traffic stop. The driver fled the scene, drove south on 35th Avenue, eluding officers at a high rate of speed, flattening both passenger-side tires and pulled into a townhome subdivision in the 2100 block of 35th Avenue. The driver ran to one of the townhomes, where the door was open for him, and quickly shut the door behind him. At 4:25am, a reverse 911 call was sent to residents in the neighborhood to stay in their homes during the duration of the incident and local schools were placed on a secure status. The status was lifted at 10:34am. At 9:25am, officers took Jose Mejia, 37, into custody for felony menacing, felony vehicular eluding, illegal discharge of a weapon, reckless endangerment, obstruction of police and failure to leave premise upon request of a peace officer. Mejia’s wife, Elena Garza-Mejia, 41, was also taken into custody with obstruction of a police officer and failure to leave premise upon request of a peace officer. This is an ongoing investigation. All charges are merely an accusation, and all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty. We are asking anybody with information on this case to contact Detective Elizabeth Finch at (970) 350-9682. No further information will be released today.###
