GREELEY, Colo. – The Greeley Police Department, in partnership with the City of Greeley, will begin issuing citations for anyone caught speeding, starting today. Two mobile speed cameras have been placed in the city’s high-risk areas and are fully operational after a 30-day warning period. Any vehicle captured speeding by these mobile cameras will receive a $40 fine for violations in non-school zones, and $80 fines for speed violations in a school zone or maintenance, construction or repair zone. Citations do not incur points on a driver’s license. However, if the vans capture a driver going 25mph or more over the posted limit, the Greeley Police Department has the option to increase the citation to a misdemeanor offense and personally serve the defendant. In those cases, fines will be higher and points will be assessed. The City of Greeley has contracted with Verra Mobility, a leader in speed safety technology. The cameras capture images of vehicle license plates and send them through secure video. The Greeley Police Department verifies each infraction before a fine is issued. Commander Mike Heck, who oversees the Greeley Police Department traffic unit, said the department receives many complaints about traffic dangers within the city. "We all must change our reckless driving behavior. This program has shown how seriously Greeley takes road safety. We believe adding this resource along with continuing with traditional traffic enforcement will help improve the quality of life for the citizens of Greeley and make our roads safer."
