Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) NIBIN Van Media Event
GREELEY, Colo. - The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Denver Field Division, in cooperation with the Greeley Police Department, is excited to offer the media an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the powerful crime-fighting capabilities of the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN). One of only two mobile NIBIN vans in the country is currently being utilized in Colorado. Using advanced 3D imaging technology, NIBIN links evidence from violent crime scenes across the state and beyond, closing jurisdictional loopholes that criminals once exploited. Event Details: • Date: Tuesday, August 6, 2024 • Time: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. • Location: Greeley Police Department, 2875 W. 10th St., Greeley, CO • Parking: Media should park in the visitor parking area on the west side of the police department and will be escorted to the NIVIN van in a secured area nearby. Why NIBIN Matters NIBIN is a vital and free tool for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the fight against violent crime. By analyzing ballistic evidence from 175 sites nationwide, NIBIN helps link crime scenes, identify shooters, and track down illegal firearms. This technology is instrumental in generating leads and solving cases that might otherwise remain unsolved. Fact Sheet: Fact Sheet - National Integrated Ballistic Information Network | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (atf.gov). Showcasing the IBIS BRASSTRAX Machine At the core of NIBIN is IBIS BRASSTRAX, an advanced ballistic imaging system that captures and compares the unique markings on shell casings recovered from crime scenes. These comparisons are used to match casings from different crime scenes, creating a network of linked evidence to track down criminals and prevent further violence. What to Expect at the Event: • See NIBIN in Action: Watch demonstrations of the BRASSTRAX machine and learn about its role in ballistic analysis. • Hear Success Stories: Discover real-world examples of how NIBIN has helped solve crimes and bring perpetrators to justice. NIBIN Success Stories | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (atf.gov) • Understand Collaborative Efforts: Gain insights into how local and federal agencies work together using NIBIN to enhance public safety. Media Opportunities Media representatives are invited to attend and cover this event. There will be opportunities to interview ATF Denver Field Division Special Agent in Charge Brent Beavers and ATF Crime Gun Intelligence Supervisor Nathan Johnson who will be giving a presentation of the NIBIN Van and live demonstration of BrassTrax and comparison process. Executives from the Greeley Police Department will also be available to discuss their use of NIBIN and other crime prevention initiatives in their community. This is a rare chance to witness the cutting-edge technology that is significantly impacting ATF’s mission to protect the public from violent crime and support local law enforcement partners.
