Armed Suspect Dead by Suicide Following Eight Hour Standoff

GREELEY, Colo. –  On Sunday, December 14, at approximately 8:35am, Greeley Police responded to the 4700 Block of 29th Street on reports of a disturbance with weapons. A woman reported a male in her residence had assaulted her and was armed with a shotgun. The woman was able to escape the residence prior to officers’ arrival.

At approximately 9:05am, a Reverse 911 text was sent to residents in a three-block radius advising them to shelter in place. The 53-year-old male suspect barricaded himself inside the residence. He initially engaged in communication with the Crisis Negotiation Unit but subsequently ceased all contact.

A search warrant was issued and the Greeley Police Department’s SWAT team deployed efforts to get the suspect to surrender. When officers made entry into the house, they located the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Reverse 911 was cancelled at approximately 5:00pm. The name of the suspect will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office pending next of kin notification. This is an ongoing investigation, anyone with information on the case should contact Detective John Colgate at john.colgate@greeleypd.com

No further information will be released today.
