Woman Seriously Injured in E-Scooter Crash
GREELEY, Colo. – On Friday, September 25, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Greeley Police officers responded to a traffic collision at the intersection of 12th Avenue and 16th Street.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 25-year-old woman was riding an e-scooter southbound on 12th Avenue when she failed to yield to oncoming traffic while crossing 16th Street. She was struck by a westbound Subaru sedan, driven by a 21-year-old woman.
The e-scooter rider sustained serious injuries but is expected to survive. The driver of the Subaru was not injured.
Initial findings indicate the e-scooter rider was at fault for the collision. No charges have been filed against her at this time, however charges may be pending following the outcome of the investigation. The driver of the Subaru is not facing charges.
As electric scooters continue to grow in popularity, we urge all riders, drivers and pedestrians to share the road safely:
• Obey traffic signs and signals: E-scooters are subject to the same traffic laws as bicycles and motor vehicles. Riders must stop at red lights and stop signs and yield the right-of-way- when entering or crossing a street.
• Scan before crossing: Always pause and look both ways before crossing any intersection or entering a roadway, even if you have the right-of-way.
• Protect your head: Always wear properly fitted Consumer Product Safety Commission-approved helmets. Helmet use significantly reduces the risk of severe brain injury in a crash.
• Stay unplugged and focused: Never ride while using headphones, earbuds or operating a mobile phone. Distracted riding prevents you from hearing approaching vehicles, sirens or hazards.
• Increase visibility: Ride predictably and avoid sudden turns. Wear bright, reflective clothing and ensure your e-device is equipped with a functioning front headlight and rear taillight or reflector.
