Xcel Energy is currently assessing the potential for a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in neighboring communities that could impact the Greeley area on Wednesday, December 17. PSPS events are used during extreme weather conditions -- such as high winds and increased wildfire risk -- to help protect public safety by reducing the risk of powerlines sparking fires. At this time no outage has been confirmed for Greeley, but residents are encouraged to prepare in case power is temporarily interrupted.

Be aware and be prepared. Taking a few simple steps now can help reduce disruptions and keep your household safe if shutoff occurs:

  • Charge cell phones, laptops, and backup battery packs.
  • Fill your gas tank and make sure you know how to open your garage door manually.
  • Gather flashlights, extra batteries, water, and nonperishable food.
  • Plan for how you will stay informed if power and internet service are unavailable.

Please also take time to check on neighbors, especially older adults, people with disabilities or those who may need extra assistance during a power outage.

Community members with medical needs that require electricity should always have backup power options in place and ensure they are enrolled in Xcel Energy's Medical Exemption Program. Registration helps Xcel understand critical needs in the community, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted power. Hospitals and emergency rooms are for emergencies only -- planning ahead is essential. Xcel Energy will continue to evaluate conditions and provide updates as they become available. For the latest information on potential power shutoffs and preparedness resources, visit: https://co.my.xcelenergy.com/s/outage-safety/wildfires/power-shutoffs/event-update
