GREELEY, Colo. — The City of Greeley has finished retiming traffic signals across the city. The project is anticipated to save drivers more than 204,000 hours each year. This equals about $5 million in time-value savings.

The project updated signal timing at 63 intersections across the city. It aimed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increase safety for all road users.

“This project helps our community move more safely and efficiently,” said Traffic Engineer Scott Logan. “It’s an example of how smart investments can improve daily life for residents.”

The $283,000 project received 90 percent of its funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant program.

Engineers developed the new timing plans using traffic data, field observations, and modeling software. City staff then fine-tuned the signals over several weeks to improve results.

The “before and after” study confirmed the project's effectiveness. For every $1 invested, the city estimates that the community will see $490 in return over the next five years. City officials plan to review and update signal timing about every five years. This will help Greeley adjust to new traffic patterns as it grows.
