Elijah's Journey: From Homelessness to Hope
Elijah spent over four years living on the streets, three of which were deeply impacted by substance use addiction. After losing his vehicles and having his work tools stolen, Elijah faced extreme financial hardship. He relied on odd jobs like selling pallets and collecting scrap metal to survive. With no family support and a sense of hopelessness, Elijah refused assistance from community resources and declined to stay at the local winter shelter.
Despite his reluctance, the City of Greeley Outreach team consistently reached out. Though Elijah initially declined their support, the team’s persistent compassion made an impact. “I knew they were serious about helping me,” Elijah said. The Outreach team provided him with food and water and eventually placed him in a hotel. “I thought I was ready, but I wasn’t. But Outreach was still there for me.”
Through the Outreach team’s efforts, Elijah was referred to the Rapid Rehousing Program. With support from the Rapid Rehousing Program, he secured stable housing and received startup furniture which felt “more at home.” Elijah was excited to be able to call somewhere home and open a refrigerator with food. Elijah enrolled in and completed a Peer Support Specialist certification course, and with the help of his case manager, built a resume and began applying for jobs. He has since been offered a position as a Peer Support Specialist—an opportunity he’s proud to pursue.
Elijah has also been connected with the Weld Food Bank, dental services, and received a free pair of eyeglasses. With a stable home and strong community connections, Elijah has maintained his sobriety and is now reconnecting with his family. Though he has construction experience and could make more money in that field, Elijah chooses instead to help others on their recovery journeys. “I just feel like I have a sense and a purpose now,” he shares.
Elijah remains actively involved in the Rapid Rehousing Program and has become a positive force within the Greeley community. To many in the unhoused population, Elijah is now a symbol of hope and transformation. While the details of his journey are inspiring, it’s Elijah’s unwavering positivity, dedication, and genuine smile that truly define his impact.
Elijah is not only changing his own life—he’s inspiring change in others.
