Greeley Fire Department to Host Open House for National Fire Prevention Week

To celebrate Fire Prevention Week, the Greeley Fire Department will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. October 14 at Fire Station #5 (4701 W. 24^th Street).

The department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year’s campaign. The campaign, “Cooking safety starts with you: Pay attention to fire prevention,” works to educate everyone about simple actions they can take to be safe while cooking.

According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths.

The Greeley Fire Department offers these key safety tips to help reduce the risk of a cooking fire:

1. Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you’re cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
2. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
3. Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried. 

About the Open House

The open house gives the community an opportunity to interact with the Greeley Fire Department. Visitors will also learn more about fire prevention and the services provided by the Greeley Fire Department. This year’s Open House includes fun and educating activities such as:

• Fire station tours
• Engine and ladder tours
• The chance to win a Golden Swag Bag
• Firsthand look at a med-evac helicopter, UC Health ambulance, hazmat command rig, and an antique engine
• Food trucks
• Blow-up obstacle course
• Music
• Dunk tank
• Interactive science project
