History

Island Grove Regional Park is one of Colorado’s oldest parks, with a legacy of bringing people together that dates back centuries. Originally a campground for the Ute and Arapaho tribes, the area was later designated as parkland in the late 1860s by Nathaniel Meeker, founder of Union Colony (present-day Greeley). The park’s towering cottonwood trees, some planted as early as 1869, have provided shade for generations of visitors.

Over the years, Island Grove has evolved into a premier event complex, while preserving its deep historical roots. The park was once home to a trolley line extension in 1912, making it a popular recreation site. It also served as a burial site for the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Sioux tribes, reflecting the area's significant cultural history.

Today, Island Grove continues to be a community gathering place, offering a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities.
