Man Arrested for Destroying Five Gunshot Detection Units

GREELEY, Colo. – On Sunday, August 2, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Greeley Police officers responded to the intersection of 12th Avenue and 15th Street on reports of vandalism to city-owned public safety devices.

According to witness reports, a man was seen walking down the street with a crowbar. Upon arrival, officers located Patrick Muniz, 22, matching the description of witness accounts and carrying the crowbar. He was arrested without incident and officers located a damaged gunshot detection device nearby. Subsequent investigation revealed a total of five devices had been vandalized in the area

Gunshot detection devices are small, solar-powered audio sensors mounted on utility poles or streetlight to capture impulse sounds. When multiple sensors pick up a sound signature, the system uses acoustic triangulation to locate the source of the noise.

Muniz was booked into Weld County Jail on charges of Class 5 Felony criminal mischief, theft and tampering with physical evidence.

The Greeley Police Department has a zero-tolerance policy for vandalism. Acts of criminal mischief damage our community’s property, waste public resources and diminish the quality of life for all residents. Any individuals defacing or damaging property will be fully investigated and prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law.
