Multi-Agency Response Leads to Arrest of Vehicle Thief and Hit-and-Run Suspect

GREELEY, Colo. – On Wednesday, July 1, at approximately 6:20p.m., Greeley Police received reports of a traffic crash hit-and-run at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Highway 34. Witnesses reported that the driver of a Jeep Cherokee hit a vehicle and fled north on foot toward an apartment complex. The Jeep was later determined to have been stolen from Denver.

Officers arrived at the complex and located the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Dayquan Fields. Upon contact, Fields stole an idling Amazon delivery van and fled south. Due to the high-risk nature of the incident, Greeley Police pursued the suspect and requested assistance from the neighboring agencies.

During the pursuit, Milliken Police deployed spike strips, which the Fields managed to evade. Fields then drove the stolen van through a fence and into a farm where police were successfully able to utilize a pinning maneuver, disabling the vehicle. Fields attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody without further incident.

Fields was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and was subsequently booked into Weld County Jail. He remained uncooperative and assaulted a Weld County booking deputy, resulting in additional charges.

Fields faces felony charges of 2nd degree motor vehicle theft, vehicular eluding, 2nd degree criminal trespassing, criminal mischief, 2nd degree assault on a peace officer, two fugitive of justice charges, and numerous misdemeanor charges including resisting arrest, careless driving and reckless endangerment.

The Greeley Police Department is grateful to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, Evans Police Department and Milliken Police Department for their assistance in this case.
