Woman Struck and Killed by Train
GREELEY, Colo. – On Thursday, April 23, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Greeley Police responded to the 300 Block of N. 8th Avenue following reports of a pedestrian being struck by a train.
A Union Pacific train was traveling south when the conductor observed an object on the tracks. Realizing that it could be a person crouching down on the tracks, the conductor immediately sounded the train’s horn and applied the emergency braking system.
Despite these efforts, the train, which was carrying approximately 26 million pounds of freight, was unable to stop in time, given the roughly 100-foot reaction distance.
Emergency responders located the 37-year-old Greeley woman, but she had already succumbed to her injuries. Her identity will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office pending notification of next-of-kin.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information on this case should contact Officer Josh Franklin at Josh.Franklin@greeleypd.com.
No further information will be released today.
