GREELEY, Colo. — The City of Greeley is accepting applications to fill the vacant Ward 1 seat on the Greeley City Council following Councilmember Tommy Butler’s resignation, which was announced at the March 17 City Council meeting.

Under the Greeley City Charter, a councilmember who accepts a nomination for another government office must resign from City Council. Butler’s resignation created a vacancy in the Ward 1 seat effective March 18, 2026.

The City encourages qualified Ward 1 residents interested in public service to apply by April 17, 2026. The City expects to fill the vacancy in early to mid-May.

“It has been an honor to work with so many people that care so deeply about the future of this community,” said Butler. “Over the last six years, this council has done some amazing work. We have helped to build amazing affordable housing projects like Hope Springs and StarRise, we have funded a lot of road and sidewalk upgrades — particularly in East Greeley, in places where it was long overdue — and we have just started a lot of transformative projects."

Application Process and Eligibility

Applications for the Ward 1 seat opened on Friday, March 27, 2026. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Not currently hold another elective office
  • Not have a felony conviction
  • Have been a resident of Greeley for at least one year immediately prior to the vacancy date of March 18, 2026
  • Have been a resident of Ward 1 for at least 90 days before March 18, 2026

The application is included in the City’s standard Boards and Commissions application. Applicants should select “Councilmember Ward 1” from the dropdown menu under the question, “Which Boards would you like to apply for?”

After the application deadline, City Council will review submissions. Interviews may be conducted during the May 5 City Council meeting. The person appointed will serve until the next municipal election in November 2027.

Residents interested in serving Ward 1 are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
