GREELEY, Colo. — The City of Greeley is slated to receive $850,000 in federal funding to improve safety on 35th Avenue. U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and District 8 Congressman, Gabe Evans, requested the funds on the city’s behalf. Congress included the award in the federal budget, which was signed into law on February 3, 2026.

“This funding goes directly to the intersections where our data shows the greatest need. 35th Avenue is one of our busiest and highest-crash corridors,” said Steven Younkin, deputy chief engineer. “For the students, riders, and neighbors who use it every day, these improvements will make a real difference.”

What this means for residents

The money will pay for safety upgrades at four intersections: 35th Avenue at 16th Street, 20th Street, 22nd Street, and 25th Street. These spots were chosen because they have some of the highest crash rates in Greeley, especially for people on foot or on a bike. This stretch of 35th Avenue connects students to Greeley West High School and nearby elementary schools. It also serves bus riders, families, and neighbors headed to parks and other local destinations, such as Centerplace.

Each intersection’s work will include better traffic signals, improved crosswalks, and upgraded lighting. Some locations will also get new technology to detect people crossing on foot, as well as changes to slow vehicle speeds. The full project is estimated to cost $1,510,619. The $850,000 federal award will be combined with a 20% match from the City’s Transportation Development Fee fund.

Impact

The project supports two goals set by Greeley City Council: Vision Zero, which aims to end all fatal and severe crashes on city streets by 2045, and safety and mobility goals from the city’s Transportation Master Plan. This work also complements mobility enhancements that will be completed within the next several years on the MERGE project. Senator Bennet and Congressman Evans requested this funding as part of more than $141 million secured for 110 Colorado projects in the 2026 federal budget.

Construction timing will be announced as the project moves forward. Residents can stay informed and will be able to share input at SpeakUpGreeley.com.
